MetMo Brass Pen in the workshop, surrounded by engineering instruments

Why Have We Created MetMo Pen?

We set out to create the ultimate fidget pen. We were fascinated by the engineered dual-threaded diamond screws that have been used since the start of the century, and the mesmerising effect they give when two nuts can spin in both directions, so we set to work to capture this magic and combine it with a solid writing implement.

The Result?

The first functional diamond thread that you can actually buy!

Who's it For?

Made for designers, engineers, thinkers, and tinkerers. Anyone who wants to just take a moment to focus, relieve stress or just play around. Writing an essay by hand (at least that's how we did it back in my day) is taxing on the metacarpus, but MetMo Pen provides instant relief both physically and mentally.

Super Hard Wearing

Machined from solid metals with a custom shallow angle thread, MetMo Pen just refuses to stop working. The increased pitch of the threads give them much more root material, making them incredibly strong when pitted against everyday drops and vehicular encounters.

We've also built in a nice tolerance between the pen and nuts which, coupled with the huge thread engagement, means your MetMo Pen can survive even the most brutal encounters with heavy machinery.

A Satisfying Object in More Ways Than One

Straddling the line between tool and toy, MetMo Pen serves perfectly as a quality everyday pen.

German Balls?

More than just a toy, this guy is designed to be a serious writing implement. A specially designed smooth-to-hold tip and a German engineered ballpoint makes this pen a joy to use. We use a traditional oil based ink and the quality of the cartridge ensures no blotting with a smooth line weight from the moment you put pen to paper.

Comfort Grip

Machined to a smooth tip, MetMo Pen is made to be comfortable to hold. Through many hours of testing we stripped back the texture just enough so that it gives a premium feel while writing.

Satisfying Tactile Feedback

The machined diamond pattern is more than just a knurled finish and gives instant pressure feedback to relieve those anxious fingers.... it's like a tiny massage for your hands; it sounds odd but it really feels good!

Solid Brass Nuts

Two precision machined nuts with a multi-start thread bring this design to life. Fiddle with a motion like no other as these two nuts spin opposite ways but move in the same direction! What!? Weird but so cool!

Perfectly Balanced Aluminium and Solid Brass

Precision machined and precisely weighted. MetMo Pen is in line with the finest writing implement you can buy, because we wanted this to be an excellent pen that is a joy to write with. We spent countless hours perfecting this so it feels totally natural to use.

Silky Smooth Ejection

More than just a toy, deez nuts can be used to eject the pen in a silky smooth and satisfying way.  Hold the loader, pull down and watch the magic.

Satisfaction Zone

Simply sliding the nuts open and closed is huuuuuuugely fascinating and can keep you absent-mindedly fiddling for hours, with countless combinations to explore and scratch that satisfaction itch!

Brass Case

What pen is complete without a case?

We wanted to create a weighted case unlike any other that shows off the full dual-threaded nature. This is the perfect place to keep the pen looking great, while making a statement and an interesting talking point on your desk.

Making a MetMo Pen

Each component is precisely formed using state of the art CNC machines. The complex geometry that allows the pen to perform its magic is slowly and precisely machined into the outer profile, one silky smooth thread at a time. The machine is then indexed 45 degrees and another thread is formed. This process is repeated six times.  Once complete, the machine is switched over to create the anti-clockwise threads and the process begins all over again. I'm tired just typing this!

History of This Simple Mechanical Motion

What's so special about this thread, I hear you ask? Can't you just make it the same way you make a screw?

Well, the first thing is that diamond screws are not really screws at all! At least not the conventional way we think of screws, like the ones that hold chairs together. They are more akin to the Archimedes screw, that is a profile designed to achieve a specific job.

Original screwdriver patent, by I.Allard

So, What's the Use of a Diamond Screw?

The earliest examples of diamond screws in use date back to 1892, where it was applied to a mechanical screwdriver during a period of fierce innovation started by Isaac Allard, and can still be found today. Although it has been heavily refined over the years with extra ratchets and features.

More on the Diamond Screw

Another variation of a continuous diamond screw was also invented in 1938 on the oil fields of Texas to handle winding and prevent damage to steel cables that, at the time, were a recent innovation. These are still in use all over the world today, mostly on ships and in industry where these cables are produced.

Outside of large industry, the double threaded profile does not feature in anything that you can buy due to the expense of manufacture and limited mechanical properties.

Our take on the mechanical principal has eight starting points, compared with a conventional two, and then stacked on top of each other to miniaturise the diamond pattern, so MetMo Pen is a combination of the diamond screw and a high torque ball screw used in machinery!

So, what's the deal? Why does it cost £89.99?

We always use the best materials we can get our hands on. We've used premium brass and hard anodised aircraft grade aluminium. Each part is individually machined in a laborious low volume production machine, then every part needs to be set up by hand and slowly cut to ensure the fine tolerances are maintained to make sure each part fits together perfectly. This all adds to the time and expense of making each pen.

We wanted to create a piece that was less mass-manufactured to allow a more unique design that could really capture the magic of the engineering involved.

MetMo Pen is only produced in small batches, which helps to maintain quality and ensure our unique designs last a lifetime.

Attractive, sleek and fully functional. Whether you're fiddling away or jotting down notes, this writing tool is a stress-reliever.

Review of wing nut pen 🖊️

Great! I like how heavy the pen is in my hand, and the distraction the two wing nuts 🔩 allows for is worth it alone. Will make long boring meetings more bearable

Best gift ever.

I gave this gift to my brother-in-law, who works for the CSIRO(Commonwealth Science, Industry Research Organisation). The wonderment in his eyes needed no explanation of whether he liked it or not. He said he couldn't wait to show it to all the engineers he worked with.On a lighter note, we happened to notice his wife playing with the pen and asked her why she liked his present so much. Her reply brought the roof down - " Oh, I just love playing with its nuts!"A wonderful gift and a source of enchantment to everyone that sees it.

Hugely Happy!

This pen was actually a gift for someone else but we understand that it was a huge success, not only with the recipient himself but with the rest of the family as well. It arrived very quickly, extremely well packaged and in excellent condition. The whole shopping experience with Metmo was exceedingly positive.

This review is for the set: After using this product for a while I can honestly say its not worth the hype. There are a few serious design flaws:1. There is no way to lock the screws in place. Not when storing the pen in the case and not when using it to write. You basically have to take them of and tisk loosing them. 2. The pen is too thick. I went for the aluminum version as the weight resembles a regular pen, I’m sure the brass pen is even worse when it comes to writing with it. 3. There is no way to retract the ball into the pen. A springy mechanism would’ve made more sence. Even for the main purpose of playing with it, it’s not that much fun. I’m disappointed I got this product.

Hi Alon,I'm sorry to hear you haven't had the best experience with your Pen, and we really appreciate your feedback on this. Brilliant quality and perfect experience

I have just received the pen and it is just what I hoped for, fantastic quality. Looks very luxurious, beautifully made and really fun design.I have also had a great experience with the customer service - I have asked for engraving being done quite last minute and it was done and executed perfectly with Shay from customer service being very responsive and helpful. Very happy with the experience and the pen!

Thanks so much Magda, and I'm so glad Shay was able to help with this!

Metmo Pen

As a pen it works just fine and it makes for a good conversation piece. It is well constructed, beautifully made and it won’t roll of the desk. Otherwise, I don’t know what the pen is supposed to do. Unless it’s just a fidget.

Good product but Tax costs ruin the purchasing experience

Dear Metmo team,I was glad to offer a Metro Aluminium Pen to my father for Christmas this year… However, I’m very disappointed by FEDEx charges (28,56€) in addition to the initial delivery costs :I bought a pen at 106,01€ and I paid 18,85€ for delivery (total 124,86€). This may worth it but please consider that with FEDEx taxes, this is a very expensive pen (153,42€ in total) !!You didn’t mention this extra costs during the purchasing process. What could you do to sweetened the pill ??Best regards

Okay, stickier function than expected.

Not as smooth as the function looks in the videos.

Hi Scott, As brass is a softer metal you may find that the nuts need working in slightly to get them running super smooth, or you can add a little oil to the inside of the nuts to help them along. The more you play with the Pen the smoother it gets!

Pen missing fundamental items

I love the pen and love the creativity and engineering of it. However it arrived with no spring nor a refill. I bought a refill and was disappointed when I realized there was no spring in the pen which allows the refill to be retracted when not in use. Hence I have not been able to use the pen.

Underwhelmed

I bought it for my husband for Christmas. Packaging was really cheap for a very expensive pen, the actually pen cartridge also looks really cheap. I can’t quite understand how I was stupid enough to spend that much money on a pen I thought would be amazing and was truly underwhelmed, my husband would be horrified if he knew what it cost me.

Very disapointed

I was really expecting something special, exceptional. But not. It's neither a nice pen to see, touch and use and neither a nice object to play with. The 2 screws are not working smoothly. And one often block. Can I return the pen ? Or exchange with a cube ?

Love the fidget idea for this pen and it makes a great desktop pen but does not go any further then that. If you intend to carry this pen around it will not happen as the pen is longer then normal pens and is heavier due to the fact it is made out of aluminum and I can only imagine how heavy the brass version is. But as a fidget item it is great and rate it 5 stars for that part because it is extremely fun to play with I only wish it was a tad bit smaller and waaayyy more portable as far as the carrying it around part goes.Metmo you have a great idea with this and I do truly love this pen for the fidget aspect but it does need some adjustments to make it even better going forward.
