MetMo Singularity Set - Tungsten Disc

Newtonian glass reflectors are normally used in telescopes, ground and precision polished to minute accuracies to allow for an optically perfect image. Now, we’re using that same precision and perfect polishing process to create an unrivalled smoothness. The curvature is CNC ground to a surface accuracy of λ/20,  an ultra-precision optical specification. 

What does this do beyond looking damn cool on your desk and being nearly as smooth as James Brown on a Tuesday? It gives you the smoothest running surface for a disc anywhere outside of a specialist lab or NASA (and they might not let you use theirs).

What if you took all of the above, and then made it in tungsten? We simply had to know! The result? One damn heavy spolling coin that runs like a charm. Surprise the unaware with this weighty tungsten disc - it’s small, but boy is it mighty. 

We’ve made the Norse men proud by fashioning these heavy lumps into something useful, giving them a geometric upgrade. Enjoy this weighty scale model, akin to the original with a tungsten upgrade.

Ground breaking miniaturisation, without the shrink ray! 

We wanted to capture the magic of spolling, but also wanted something a little more pocket sized - so that’s what we did! Now you can enjoy the same motion from this coin sized collection. Fiddle with them on your desk or take them out for a walk, they’re portable and pocket friendly! 

These smaller discs are engineered to run for a longer time, so even though they’re smaller in size they still deliver a mighty long spolling. Shrimpy satisfaction. 

Original versions of this disc design from the 80’s used plastic housed makeup mirrors, but we knew we could do better than that. We did away with the flimsy set-up and matched our polished Newtonian mirrors with a machined base. From a solid billet of aerospace grade aluminium, this housing has been hard anodised for a solid and sturdy spolling base. 

Knurled brass fittings allow for a fine and smooth adjustment to the base, positioned on outriggers with a fine screw thread so you can make delicate micro-adjustments while your discs spol, or crack out your trusty inclinometer beforehand to get your base perfectly levelled. 

Master the power of the pharaoh and level your base. As the ancient Egyptians knew, you need a flat foundation for your pyramid; the same is true for getting the perfect spol with a conical frustum! These brass adjusting feet let you tweak and perfect the base until you are running true. So if you don’t happen to live in a pyramid you can get your Discs perfectly balanced.

Each disc is lovingly machined by a robot, giving each one the perfect accuracy only achievable on a precision machining centre. We machine the discs in small batches so that we can check each one as it’s made, ensuring each metal wedge is perfectly finished.

Yep, you read that right. For the first time ever we have teamed up and we're working with the legendary Steve Mould! He came to us with this cracking challenge of remaking one of these spinning discs to see just how far we could push the idea and what it would take to make it run for the longest time possible.

After over a year of fiddling around and countless CNC machined prototypes, we finally nailed it and became at one with the disc!
