Why Have We Created MetMo Driver?
MetMo Driver is a hybrid of the hand braces of old (the precursors to electric drills) and modern ratchet screwdrivers.
We set out to infuse our signature MetMo satisfaction with one of the most well used tools in existence, the humble screwdriver. We were fascinated by Conrad Baumann's ratchet driver from the 1950's and its mesmerising exposed ratchet mechanism, so we set to work to create the most powerful and compact driver in existence and, while we're at it, inject some MetMo satisfaction at every opportunity.

Driving Back in Time

Why This Design? Why Not a Modern Ratchet Screwdriver?
Modern ratchet screwdrivers are built to a cost and made from cheap plastics. We wanted to create something that was a full metal construction and built from materials that would last generations. The Driver's design lets you put in screws much easier than a standard screwdriver.
We fell in love with the original design by Conrad Baumann and just how versatile it could be. The original was purely a screwdriver, but with standardisation of bits we saw a huge opportunity to turn this concept into one hell of a multi-tool.

So What's the Deal, Why Does It Cost £199?
We always use the best materials we can get our hands on. For this project we've used premium metals normally used in the aerospace industry. There are a lot of components in the Driver, with each part individually machined in a laborious low volume production machine, then every piece needs to be set up by hand and slowly cut to ensure the fine tolerances are maintained to make sure each part fits together perfectly. This all adds to the time and expense of making each Driver.
Normally screwdrivers are made from one or two pieces of low cost metal and plastic that are stamped out and moulded. We wanted to create a piece that was less mass manufactured and more fitting to the Driver's heritage, as well as being top quality to last a lifetime.
MetMo Driver is only produced in small batches and we only deal directly with our backers, this helps to maintain quality and ensure our unique designs last a lifetime.
Testing In Progress
When we started we wanted to be sure that the handle would survive a serious screwing session, so we set to work making sure we tested every component of our new design.
We built a test rig which allowed us to apply 100kg (220lbs) of weight through the handle in a worst case scenario. (Essentially, if you could put all of your weight through two fingers, that's what was simulated).
As you can see it's pretty difficult to apply this much weight to something, so we feel like this is enough.
We put the fun part of the test in the video below, and it shows the handle deflect and return to its original position with no damage.
Making of the Driver Prototype

We go through every milling, drilling, turning and tapping process to make a Driver from raw billets of metal so you can see the amount of work involved in making the tool. Although this one off was made by hand using manual machinery, the production ones use industrial CNC machinery.

I ordered the standard driver, I'd seen an old German one with wooden handle many years ago and until it popped up on insta, I had almost forgotten this little beauty. When it arrived, I put it to the test and was very pleased, am very pleased. But I thought that it would benefit from a handle that screwed apart to store the bits. At this stage I was unaware that Metmo actually did make one of these handles already. So I offered critique via email and ordered on some 30mm stainless steel and brass bar with a packet of ball bearing catches in readiness to make the handle but Metmo responded to my email and today I received the handle complete with bit holder and a good touch, rubber washer. This was sent FOC and received with much love. They don't make drivers like this anywhere else and they rarely make companies with genuine customer service either. Metmo is my new thing, but one, you'll love it too.

Despite it getting lost in the mail, and the wrong replacement sent, Metmo made it right in the end. After I finally got it, and opened it, it was all I expected and more, all 700 grams of it! Super heavy and well made, with nice machine work and details, this thing, while expensive, is everything Metmo said it was! Super happy, and thanks for the excellent customer service Metmo!

Excellent well-made device with lots of torque. Comes in particularly useful when a flimsy screwdriver does not do the job.
This is an awesome tool and I really like it in the full stainless. I bought two of them. The action and finish on them is really nice as well and it's nice and heavy.
The ratchet pin is so scratchy. Almost feels like nails on a chalk board. Not exactly enjoyable to fidget around with.

Metmo and their team made good and sent a new part free of charge. If I could delete my 1 star review I would. There was miscommunication on the email thread. The driver is now 100% and I couldn’t be happier.

Made in UK. And quality weight with it is better than the aluminum version I purchased before. The design is also evolved. I would buy if they make a 3rd one smaller than the pocket drive also in stainless steel.smaller but larger than metmo 7.
Ordered this and the press pin on the head of the chuck drifted during production causing the head to not ratchet properly. I reached out to customer service and they responded once and never again. Now I have a heavy paperweight. Extremely disappointed with quality control and their customer service. If they make this right I’ll update my review to reflect that

I used to be in love with the Metmo brand and I like the idea of a tool I could pass down to my kids, then after buying several products (the aluminum driver, the leather holder, the mini driver, and this Stainless Steel Driver) I realized that every single one of these products has quality control problems of some sort. Regardless, I give 3 stars because aside from the issue listed below, the product is made of quality materials and is now functional after some repairs
For the unit I received, there is not enough clearance for the brass pin to make it all the way down when the ratcheting pin is forced down by a cam on the chuck, thus the ratcheting mechanism sticks making this a less-than-reliable tool. I had to disassemble my aluminum driver and use the parts the parts that I knew functioned properly to get this to be a functional tool.

Truly, nothing else feels the same in hand. Beautifully designed and machined, great fit and finishes, with a ratcheting mechanism that gives you plenty of confidence this thing will outlast any other tool you own. Simple to disassemble too in case of any maintenance.
I love the Driver and the leather case with attachments. I have gifted these to my friends, who love to be handy. The feel alone is worth the cost, but the utility, well, that is amazing. what a great tool, well thought out.
What a magnificent bit of kit! It’s so well made, oozes quality and feels so good in my hand. The weight is impressive - I don’t mind that at all as it tells me it will outlive me! The mechanical bits are precision made and although a little stiff upon receipt it is already working more smoothly. A smart tool. Something to show your mates!

This is one tough, big driver. I own both the original design with the Aluminum body but no bit holder so I decided to upgrade and buy the stainless steel version. It's one heavy tool! While I love the feel of it, and the bit holding ability, if I had to work with it holding it overhead all day, I would prefer the lighter AL version.You might think, why own a tool like this when you can have a battery op. impact driver, well if you want ultimate control over the amount of torque you apply, a hand tool can't be beat. This has way more leverage than your basic screw driver and yet fits into a space about the same size. I have a newer car with a bunch of plastic panels and soft AL screws holding them in place. This was just the right tool to remove the panel and reuse the non damaged screws. You know the mechanic at the shop would not have been so careful.I second the complaint about lack of bits. A single double ended #2 phillips and flat head screwdriver bit is included. I would be great if there were a set of double ended bits to compliment this tool. Yes an extension is included that holds the small 1/4" hex bits that are ubiquitous in your hardware store, and the bit holder holds these just fine. It also holds the basic 2" (50mm) bits which don't need the bit holder. (Wera Series 4 840/4 Z Sheet Metal Bits, are very well made but not inexpensive.) On the other hand, I did buy a set of nut driver bits, and a set of weird screw bits from Wera that make this tool function on any sort of screw head, from the strange to the ordinary. (Wera - 5059297001 Kraftform Kompakt 62 Bit Pouch Set, 33-Pieces) They of course don't store in the handle but meh that's what tool bags are for.Therefore I recommend that Metmo contract out for a set of double ended high quality bits for these drivers. I'd suggest 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm hex, #1 and #2 phillips, small and medium flat head, Robertson #1, #2, #3, #4. Would I buy this again, why? this thing is going to last forever. Would I give it as a gift, probably too expensive to gift, so no. Am I glad I own it? You bet.
$280 after shipping and doesn't include a basic set of bits. Also the bit socket is so deep that you need to have an extender... which, if included, would not nest inside the handle. Fairly disappointing.
Hi Abe,I'm sorry to hear you didn't receive any bits with your Driver! We don't have a comprehensive bit set, but they should all come with a dual ended Phillips/flat head, a 60mm bit extender, and an Allen and torx key for maintenance. Any standard 50mm bit can be used with the Driver, and you can fit 5 of these in the storage handle.I've asked our customer service team to get in touch to help on next steps, and if you have any questions they'll be able to help out.
