Back to the Future Part IV, the World's First Miniature Fractal Vice
"Someone must have thought of this before..." you say? You're right! The fractal vice concept dates back to 1913, but it was originally designed for massive, expensive machinery. We've taken that precision and miniaturised it into a handy desktop size – the versatile 'third hand' you need for everything from models and 3D prints to watches, jewellery, tools, and more.
Clamp Any Shape

Every component is machined from solid metal and held together with high tensile cap head bolts, all moving on precision ground rails making this compact vise extremely dense. We've not removed any metal for weight or cost saving, so this makes for one very rigid piece of kit. A precision fine screw drive gives superior clamping power and also very fine adjustment, all whilst reducing backlash and movement that is experienced with most vises. When clamping you're in full control, applying just the right amount of pressure without damaging what you're working on.
No More Floppy Vises
Fed up with floppy vises? We were too! Most vises you can buy are made cheap, unless you're buying gear for heavy duty machines, resulting in things just clanking about until they're done up. With Fractal Vise we've used precision ground slide rails to re-create a linear slide from machine tools, so the winding in and out of the jaws is a perfectly satisfying motion.
Turbo Drive
Really need to crush the life out of something and don’t quite have the forearm? Then you can use the hex drive in the end of the adjuster to attach a hex key (or a MetMo Pocket Driver) to get some real torque into it!
Getting Down and Knurly
Use the tie bar, or the knurled adjuster for extra grip, to give you direct feedback on what you're clamping so as not to over tighten and damage what you're working on. Designed to be comfortable when applying pressure.
A Fractal That Sticks Around
Get a grip with a silicone rubber foot! You won’t scratch the surface you put the vise on and it'll keep it from sliding around on a smooth worktop while you're using it in free standing mode, giving you a stable clamping platform you can work from.

Agile Rogue or Sturdy Blacksmith
The Black Fractal Vise is machined mainly from anodised aluminium with hardened steel jaws, and is perfect for lightweight tasks like model painting and fine detail work like watch repairs. The extra maneuverability allows you to quickly move the Vise to the perfect location.
The Stainless Steel Fractal Vise is made entirely of heavy duty steel and is built like an absolute tank to survive anything you can throw at it. They'll be digging these things up in a few hundred years, marvelling at the still functioning fractals as they clamp their bionic future fingers. Choose this option if extra stability is what you value, as it's perfect for tasks like metal work or light machining.
Small But Mighty
Designed with a high clamping force in mind, the thread is specifically designed to get as much torque as possible into the clamping faces, driving over 3000Nm of torque at maximum (around 300kg).
That’s the same as a one year old baby elephant standing on it, so you can grip what you're working on with confidence, or crush something like Vader. Just remember - the tighter your grip the more star systems will slip through your fingers.
Testing
With great power comes great responsibility. With some background in testing things to destruction, we set to work to figure out the weak points of the Fractal Vise.
There is more to vise design than just pure power, so we took that into account whilst still wanting to test things to the limit. We used a combination of simulation and good old fashioned test rigs.
On this rig we tested the vise to have a maximum clamping force of 300kg (the equivalent to a jaguars bite!), and everything was still fully operational afterwards.
What's the Deal, Why This Price?
Here at MetMo we aren't your usual 'buy it cheap, sell it high' kind of company. We think 'what would make this truly great?' then uncompromisingly work towards that goal. This pursuit means we take a totally different route to make products.
"But what does that mean?" I hear you ask! Well that means that we machine every part on state of the art CNC machines, normally used for slow precision engineering not designed for mass manufacture, and it means that we use the best materials and surface finishes we can find and not the cheapest and fastest to make. This all costs more to do, but gives you a great end product.
We do all this to make sure we are making products the way our forefathers used to, totally over engineered to last generations, because they wouldn't be happy with something that broke after a few years and neither are we!
I own most of MetMo items, but this one has to be my favorite! Such an exquisite design and yet extremely practical. Highly recommend brass jaws add-on for handling fragile items.
I have been surprised and delighted by the performance of this vice, which has simplified many workholding solutions for the small parts that I commonly make. Both on the milling machine, and when held in an adjustable vice, the Metmo solution has a good chance of gripping the part without any other support. Build quality is excellent throughout. So happy to have supported this project on Kickstarter when this is the result.
I absolutely love my fractal vise. I could not recommend it enough. Seriously, anything that's abnormally shaped or round can easily be gripped by this thing. I've been able to get snugged/press fit cylindrical tubes apart. You can even use a bigger, standard vise to grab the fractle vise for a more stout and rigid setup.This vise is really really modular with Metmo's optional accessories. Need something non-marring? Swap to brass jaws. Need to grab a really long tube? Switch to the vertical jaw setup. The dual adapter plate also allows you to bolt straight into any other object to rigidly mount it to a table if you want. I bought one for a sole vise for this reason, however, one day I'll get a second vise to double my holding potential (unlimited power).All in all, I'm extrodinarily happy with my fractal vise. The way the Kickstarter campaign was run gave me a very positive impression of the team and the promised quality of the vise. The updates were a pleasure to read—on time, informative, and clearly showing their pride in the design and production. At last, a Kickstarter campaign that was well-controlled, punctual, and flavored with a bit of great British humor.The vise itself (Metmo Black Fractal Vise 82) is—besides being beautiful—a fantastic tool for fixing irregularly shaped 3D-printed objects. Even delicate shapes that I used to struggle with using soft, wobbly clamps are now securely fixed without damage and are much easier to work on.I was genuinely surprised by how much force can be applied without breaking delicate prints. When not in use, this beauty steals the show among my other precious (display) pieces.
Well worth the wait for this excellent device. I have purchased most to the Metmo products and this is yet again a fantastic addition to my collection. Crafted to perfection this device is more than useful around the house. I have the steel verions and it looks amazing enough to keep on my desk just to admire. The jaws pretty much cling onto any shape and with no play at all. I have mine connectted to the Metmo workbench that it is attached to as can be seen by the photo. A sturdy piece of kit that I would recommend to anyone!
The folks at MetMo have knocked it out of the park once again! I think this might be my favorite product from them so far. The machining is perfect, and the build quality is superb. The fractal jaws really do make it easy to work with odd shaped materials. I added on the jaws with rubber padding and the desk mount, both of which are must-haves for my typical uses.
I saw vintage one's years ago and loved the concept so when I saw the Kickstarter I had to buy it. I was so excited to get my Fractal Vice and I was not disappointed. It's a wonderful piece of engineering, so well made. I make miniature models, so this is ideal for all those fiddly small irregular pieces.
Since I learned of fractal vices, around 5 years ago, I’ve wanted one. When I saw MetMo were making one, I knew I had to have it! Since receiving it, I’ve not been disappointed! I’ve used it for all kinds of jobs that I’d not have thought possible! My latest was to hold a miniature pool ball while I bored it out with a pillar drill! It didn’t shift a mm, so no kicks or swearing!!It really is fantastic, and the stainless is a brilliant material; I love the weight to it!!
METMO never ceases to amaze me with their excellent tools. The fractal vise is my seventh METMO tool. It is addicting to use their tools! This fractal vise is excellent for detailed work and beautiful to look at. I am afraid this is NOT my last METMO tool :-)
I am very happy with my Vice and it is exactly what i expected. The only issue i found is that the screw that holds the lead screw in place has loosend occasionally for me when opening the vice and needed to be retightend.
Exceptional quality little vise. Put the jaws to the test without a shred of disappointment. Holds strong and catches eyes sitting on the center of my work bench. Let me know when I can get the clamp and accessories in stainless steel.
I don’t need this tool every day. I probably don’t even need it every week. Maybe even every month. But when I do…boy oh boy do I get excited! The thing is an absolute pleasure to use. Highly recommend stretching to the workstation and ball mount if you can. Have it left out on a counter at home and so far it’s stopped every single male guest in their tracks.The ultimate “when you need it, nothing else will do” tool. Highest money:regret ratio of all my purchases over the years. I originally bought this as a wedding present for a friend but have decided I just can’t let it go. If you love an over-engineered product, this one is for you. The whole construction is over-engineered and super sturdy
As a prop maker, I often find myself trying to modify weird shapes, so when I discovered the fractal vice I instantly knew I wanted one. Hard to find and crazy expensive when you do, I was delighted when Metmo decided to build one, and signed up for the kickstarter at once.Skip forward a year or so and I open the box, and the first thing I think is it is smaller than I expected. I guess they listed the dimensions, but to me the pictures looked like it was about the size of a 50mm toolmakers vice, not this 38mm baby.The second observation, was just how nicely made it was. Chamfered corners, bright polished metal, smooth slideway and all round good feel to it. Then I came to use it, and I noticed just how sloppy the jaws are. This means that even when tight, everything can still reposition itself because all the parts can still move. The fractals themselves are held in with 3mm pins that have clearance at the top and are sloppy at the bottom (the pin could have been 3mm at the top, M3 in the middle and 2.5mm at the base, with a 3.1mm and a 2.6mm slot in the fractal).Then, I came to mount it in my mill and realised just how much it is not designed to do this. You can only grip half the fractal vice in the mill vice, else you cant open and close the fractal vice, and the rubber base means it doesn't sit level in the vice. I'm also not sure how suitable the base block is for being squeezed in a vice.So if you cant put it in the mill, the only thing it is really any good for is the dremel, but here is the thing; I already own an ultra versatile multi grip vice for using with the dremel, its called my left hand. It may be that if I had a second one it would increase the grip strength and the connecting plate would give me something to hold in the mill vice, but I'm not spending another £330 to test that theory. I'm sure it will see some use, mostly with the pillar drill, (though again, it doesn't sit flat because of the base rubber so all the holes will be wonky) but so far it has sat on the shelf as a very expensive paperweight.

Bringing such a highly useful item back to life with such exceptional quality is much appreciate. Got 2 of these suckers and few a gizmo addons. Best Vise (for its purpose) ever. Since seeing the "olden" days versions I have always thought this would be ideal and wondered why there where no real versions availabel except in the 3d prinitng space and those whilst interesting are not the same as the solid stainless steel precision devices we have here. Far from it. So this is a niche (which people have now rushed to fill but dont let it fool you, these guys brough it to life and do excellent work). Loveing it. So useful!
The build-up to the release of the fractal vice was impressively exciting and I followed every stage. When the day came and my MetMo parcel arrived I couldn’t have been more impressed with the fab quality, attention to detail and production excellence. The action of the fractal components is the closest to perfection I could have imagined. It was a long journey (understandably so as the goal was to produce the finest items, not the cheapest) but that journey was exciting and so worth it. I am delighted to have been part of that journey.

I was a backer on the Kickstarter campaign for the Fractal Vise, and after having received my Stainless Steel 82mm Fractal Vise, I will say that it is the finest vise I have ever had the pleasure to use. All metal, solid construction and a design that makes working on Anything doable. The 'extra bits' like the table mount system and the quick-release system all attach easily and with purpose. I have found that every item I have purchased from MetMo to be of the highest quality..and the Fractal Vise is no exception.
Ya, I bought the large version , I think the 82 stainless steel. I primarily enjoy and use it as a toy, fidget. Most of what I have bought from Metmo, The driver, the mini, and the wrench or rachet are for desk cleaning boredom. I don't use it to fix something. First time, I was introduced to Fractal Vise was from a Canadian guy who refurbished a rusty one. Then Adam S. bough a similar thing from China and then I did. Ever since it has become a hoppy or a disease for me. But when I saw that Metmo is doing the same thing in an English version, I said I gotta have it. It is a nice quality tool. but expensive toy. I hope the next version would be a bigger one and perhaps a titanium one now that they got the craft nailed. Although this stuff is a resurrection of the forgotten stuff, but I thing folks in Metmo bringing the stuff back is great once again it is (Metmo) a toy store for me. May be some crazy German / English / Japanese rachet as a next project. May be some great Compass a collaboration with the Englishman who teaches Compass reading on You tube. He has some good ideas to make the compass better. Keep it going folks.

Excellent customer service and excellent manufacturing. My only fault would be that I had to lap the jaw faces as they were not flat but only took a few seconds to fix. Took a sec to realise how the quick release worked but they added a qr code in the box. Again, excellent packaging.
