Perhaps, but these days most people call it physics. Alas, no magic tricks here. Just unnecessary yet satisfying engineering that reduces the movement of the gears to near standing still. It’s mesmerising to behold.

Do you dare release the gears? Once removed, this simple pin can only be put back in when all the gears align once more! That’s a 16,384 revolution journey - or maybe more if you forget which direction you started in!
Just like planetary alignment, this rare event can be marked with all the holes lining up and the pin being returned home like a tiny cosmic needle. How many revolutions will you get?
Why Gear Train?
Why not! We were inspired by this little bit of physics, but it’s also amazing to have a real life bit of engineering to hold and interact with. Gearboxes are always hidden away in blocks of metal and shrouded in mystery, or guarded with bright red warning signs ‘DO NOT TOUCH!’.
No longer! Now you can get hands on with how these gears work and feel. We set out to create a satisfyingly tactile, handheld, accessible version of the previously unobtainable. You can enjoy a bit of physics, baffle those who pass your desk, and most of all have some gear-shaped fun.

The Gears Have Aligned
Each part is precision machined using CNC machining, and then hand assembled in our UK workshop. Fuelled by Yorkshire tea and a desire to shine, out team machines each part from solid metal to the same tolerances used in aerospace engineering.
Each part of the Gear Train fits together like a Swiss watch, with perfectly meshed gears for maximum satisfaction. You won’t find any mass manufactured parts here, and while it takes a bit longer it also guarantees quality that lasts a lifetime.
Geared to Perfection
Introducing fidget factor; you won’t want to put this stack down! Keep idle hands busy while you come up with all your best ideas, or get lost in the motion. Gear train is a fidget toy in a class of its own. Like the world-record-breaking Class A4 steam locomotive. That’s a pretty good class to be in.
Do you think this is what fidgeters all around had in mind when they wanted to keep busy? Maybe not, but if you’re going to get fiddly it may as well be with a well engineered mechanism.

These gears are designed to be touched. Each edge has been finished to perfection, so there are no sharp bits or rough patches. When you hold this gear stack, you won’t want to let it go.
Experimental Inspiration
Artist Arthur Ganson created the piece Beholding the Big Bang, an incredible exploration of the estimated age of the universe. A set of gears over a meter long has a motor running at one end, with the final gear set in a block of concrete.
This impossible looking setup was geared down so much that even with the first gear spinning at speed, it would take 13.7 billion years for the last gear to turn. Because of this, it’s possible to anything with the final gear - in Ganson’s case, it’s embedded in concrete! The gear set still runs perfectly, and it’s a great demonstration of the principals of gear ratios and how powerful they can be.

I find this item just so unexpectedly addictive. The tactile satisfaction is immense. I love that I can fully disassemble and play around with the positions of the spacers. I've doubled up on the spacers in the middle section, borrowing from the bottom section and that allows my fat fingers to get a better hold and turn the central cog.

Although the bottom half of both stacks of gears are immovable, the overall length is perfect for holding it and manipulating with one hand. My MetMo Gear Train in steel (I also have one in brass and aluminum) is another amazing mechanical device, to play with, to learn from, and to appreciate as art. It is a simple but unusual creation, with MetMo’s precision design and engineering, extensive testing and exacting production. Gears are usually rather sharp on their external edges, but MetMo has carefully rounded these to make it very comfortable in the hand and fingers, Gear ratio is a doubling behind the outside and inside wheels and, with the extended stacking, it is easy to appreciate the differing rates of movement. Sitting on a table or shelf provides a very artistic visual, beautifully framed in whatever lighting is available. Very special !

i really love how solid the gear train feels, and it's overall heft. it's great to play around with while sitting in conference calls, during long drives, and while chilling on the couch. One note - it does show up as something 'funny' if you bring it in your carry-on luggage (at least at Toronto Pearson airport), but the minor inconvenience of a secondary luggage check was a small price to have it with me on the plane.

Was marketed as a sturdy metal material, but what was received is more like a cheap aluminum gimmick that skips gear teeth all the time and is extremely lightweight and does not feel sturdy at all! Straight into the garbage...

Suggestion: I think the axles need to be a little tighter in the support block. They are slightly wobbly and so the most proximal gears do not mesh very well. I have to hold them together to prevent the first couple of gears from slipping.
Hey Donald! Thanks for your feedback! We actually identified this issue early on and found that the pins can sometimes arrive slightly loose after being moved during transit. This can be resolved quickly by using a 2mm Allen key to tighten the post and realign the pins. As a result, we're now including an Allen key with all Gear Trains! Superb quality. Hours of enjoyment. One minor comment - needs a spot on device to store locking pin while spinning gears through their cycle.

Aside from the shaft holding the great train loosening up this is an awesome toy. The gears got out of time due to the shaft leaning. But all is well once I tightened them up.

Gear support rods came loose resulting in catastrophic disassembly. Reassembly proved successful and resolved issues. Now all turns very freely and is an amazing fidget toy.
Has the ratio of 16,000+ turns has been done in an afternoon! It has if it's measured by the locking gear, or am I making an embarrassing boob? The locking gear is what gets pinned but the final main gear which I presume is the 16,384 gear on the bottom of the main barrel has no markings! Is this where the final ratio should be measured? If so marked cog in the mail would be nice. Also my unit came apart with use, luckily I didn't loose any pieces and have the correct Allen key to put it back together again. The general feels of the thing is weighty and solid, I have the Stainless Steel version which is very shiny. Spinning 4 or 5 cogs down gives you a real machine click as it meshes.I like it, but every new product has its teething I suppose.Ray

One of my earliest memories is going to my dad's workplace on a Saturday morning. He worked at a local firm called 'Allan Green and Sons' when they were in Sutton in craven. Used to watch him for hours cutting gears, often running many machines at once. The coolant oil hung heavy in the air, wooden crates with all sorts of gears in different stages of manufacture. This fidget brings back fond memories of the early 1980's.I think I may have to treat myself on my 50th this year !!!
